Dear Editor,

I write to highlight the escalating landslide crisis in Nepal, a matter of grave concern for both its citizens and the international community. Landslides have become alarmingly frequent and severe, causing loss of life and extensive property damage.
Several factors contribute to this crisis. Deforestation, driven by logging and clearing of forests, weakens the natural stability of the land. Unregulated urbanization and construction in vulnerable areas exacerbate the problem, with inadequate planning and geological assessments. Climate change intensifies the issue as shifting rainfall patterns and more intense monsoons increase the risk.
To address this crisis, comprehensive action is imperative. Firstly, rigorous reforestation efforts and forest conservation are crucial to restoring natural stability and reducing erosion. Stringent land-use regulations must be enforced to prevent construction in high-risk zones. Investment in advanced monitoring systems for early warning and community education programs on landslide risks are vital.
Furthermore, international collaboration is necessary, recognizing that landslides affect not only Nepal but the entire region. Sharing expertise and resources can bolster mitigation efforts.
It's paramount that government, civil society, and the media prioritize this crisis. We cannot afford to wait for more lives to be lost or communities displaced before taking decisive action.
In unity, we can protect lives, preserve our environment, and safeguard the future of Nepal.
Sincerely yours,
Sabi Tamang
