RESTORATION O F MULTIPARTY SYSTEM IN NEPAL
On the 1st of Poush, 2017, King Mahendra took a drastic step by dismissing the elected government, suspending parliament, and imprisoning the Prime Minister and Ministers. He went further to ban political parties and activities, seizing all power for himself. Then, on the 22nd of Poush, 2017, he announced the implementation of an autocratic Panchayat System, further consolidating his control over the nation. The power dynamics took another turn on the 10th of Jestha, 2036, with the announcement of a referendum. The election for the referendum was held on the 20th of Baishak, 2037. Subsequently, on the 10th of Jestha, 2042, a non-violent civil disobedience movement began, and it gained momentum on the 7th of Falgun, 2046, formally starting a mass movement. Finally, on the 26th of Chaitra, 2046, the people's efforts bore fruit as the multiparty system was restored, marking a significant milestone in the country's political history.
